We were delighted and honoured when John Lee Hooker`s daughter  Zakiya came up on stage with us and performed Leadbelly`s traditional blues “In the Pines” . Gary Brooker and his group supported by  the duo Rag Mama Rag

Saturday, August 20, the Association for the Protection of the Abbaye Nouvelle in Leobard, France, chaired by Paul Barrière, offered an evening of Jazz and Blues, with the opening act, the duo “Rag Mama Rag” followed by Gary Brooker and Judy Blair. The first part of the evening was superb. The duo, Ashley and Deborah Dow, using several instruments each (Acoustic Guitar, Ukulele for him, harmonica, washboard percussion, spoons for her)  played with heart, interpreting  country blues, swing, ragtime and their personal compositions. Then came the second part. Gary Brooker on piano, Judy Blair at the organ, two guitarists and a drummer. Under the arch of the lower room of the Abbey, though 44 years have passed since his debut in the band Procol Harum, Gary`s voice was faultless .

The audience, fascinated until the end listened to the famous “A Whiter Shade Of Pale,” global success of 1967. To continue the magic, the duo “Rag Mama Rag” joined the five artists for the last few numbers. The party was over, but all will cherish the memory of that August evening and often watch videos shot that night, hoping perhaps that the local association will have them back a third time.

Yesterday, to our total delight we discovered that our song  ”Final Hour Blues”  from our Rag Mama Rag album “Struttin` and Strollin` has been used in the American action movie “Drive Angry” http://www.driveangry3d.com/

The film, released earlier this year, stars Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard and was directed by Patrick Lussier. The film was shot in 3-D and special effects were created by Gary Tunnicliffe. Paradise FX posesses the real 3-D cameras, which Lussier used for his film. The three cars driven by Nicolas Cage in the film are a 1964 Buick Riviera, a 1969 Dodge Charger and a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle. The lead actor Nicolas Cage narrated the supernatural film at WonderCon 2010. Patrick Lussier wrote the film with Todd Farmer. Lussier filmed the movie in Minden, Plain Dealing and Shreveport, Louisiana.

We recently arrived back from our UK/Spain tour. We were away for almost 5 weeks and clocked up around 4000 kilometres on our camping car. Unfortunately the Rag Mama Rag mobile broke down on us in Kent, leaving us without home and transport for 8 days. Needless to say we had to hire another vehicle and spent several nights in some rather expensive hotels. Fortunately my sister (Ashley`s) offered us a room for four or five nights during the tour, so lots of thanks to her. The whole episode set us back almost £2000. C`est la vie!

Despite all of this the tours went well and we had some very positive feedback from the audiences “‘One of the best evenings at the club’, ‘Fantastic musicians’, ‘That is everything I love about blues, folk and ragtime, real feel good music’ and ‘Book them again”

In the circumstances it is this positive feedback that keeps you going and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone out there for their support. Otherwise the Ubangi Stomp festival in Spain was a great experience. It takes place in the Bali Hotel in Benidorm. The audience are pure 50s rock and roll fans all decked out in 50s clothes and hairstyles. We haven`t seen so much brylcream for a long time. Held in Bourges in the Berry region of France the evenings were a great success for all of the musicians and the organisers “L`Association des Tons Tons”. Before the concert on the 8/05  Rag Mama Rag gave an interview to French television channel FRANCE3.

Although it was not expected, the French TV team stayed and filmed the entire concert. You can watch the interview and excerpts from the concert on the video below

We were there to play at The Sekanami  festival which was a week long event in the town of Adjarra.  http://sekanami.org/

The festival took place nearby to a local school.  We played to a vast crowd of enthusiastic Beninois who joined us  during the choruses of  ”Minnie the Moocher” and “Freight Train”.  This was the first time we have played in Africa and we have to say that the experience was very much an eye opener. Benin does have a lot of poverty but we rarely saw anyone who complained and the way these people carry a smile around should be a lesson to all of us in Europe. Unfortunately the last part of the trip was marred by a cancelled Air France flight leaving us and all of the other musicians stranded in Benin. All thanks must go to the festival organiser Mr Pascal de France who managed to turn this situation around by insisting that Air France should fly us home from the neighbouring country of Togo. This was all going well until we arrived at the Benin/Togo border. Two members of our group were taking photos of the overladen vehicles that were passing by. Unfortunately they had not seen the sign saying NO PHOTOS and their equipment was confiscated. This was not the end of our adventure! While waiting for our visas to be checked on the Togo side of the border one of our group shouted out that our bus had been crushed. We all ran to the point where our  two buses were parked and to our amazement discovered a crushed bus under a  huge pile of cotton bales. There was also a crushed car and motor bike. One of the  overloaded lorries had been knocked over by the wind and thus the catastrophe.  Luckily no one was injured and we all piled in to the other bus and continued our  journey. Needless to say we made it the airport in time.

We will not forget this trip in a hurry!!
